For example, in her dystopian novel The Handmaid's Tale, Margaret Atwood uses her narrator's memories to gradually explain how an ultra-conservative sect of Christianity overthrew the United States government and installed a repressive regime. Writers who begin their story in media res (in the middle of the action) often use flashbacks and memories to convey important information about events that occurred before the beginning of the narrative. An epilogue is a section at the end of a work of literature which may contextualize, reflect on, and/or briefly summarize the story's main events, or may give readers information about what happened to characters after the end of the main story.A prologue is a short introduction to a work of literature that provides context and background information for the story that follows, and which may briefly summarize the story's main events.Prologues and epilogues are two tools writers can use to create exposition, providing readers with information that allows them to better understand the story or themes of a work of literature. Below, we'll take a look at some of the major techniques that writers use to create both direct and indirect exposition. It's helpful to understand the distinction between direct and indirect exposition, but bear in mind that most works of literature use a combination of both direct and indirect exposition to convey important information to the reader. ![]() For example, if a narrator mentions that a woman is biting her fingernails and fidgeting with her purse, the reader can infer that the woman feels nervous. Indirect exposition occurs when the narrator or a character provides details that allow the reader to infer key background information and gradually assemble a fuller understanding of the world of the story. For example, in the opening chapter of I Capture the Castle by Dodi Smith, the novel's narrator uses direct exposition when she describes her sister as "nearly twenty-one and very bitter with life." Direct exposition occurs when the narrator or a character briefly pauses or delays the action of the story to introduce expository details.Though writers can use many different techniques to create exposition, it comes in two main forms: direct and indirect exposition. Writers can also build suspense by withholding expository details, and then revealing them later in a story. In non-linear narratives (stories that include flashbacks or move backward and forward in time), writers are more likely to scatter expository details throughout the work. In linear narratives (stories in which a writer describes events in the chronological order in which they occur), writers often include the bulk of the story's exposition near the beginning, then add additional expository details throughout the story-for example, each time a new character, setting, or key idea is introduced. Exposition isn't always quite that easy to spot, but some form of exposition appears in almost every work of literature, and readers typically rely on exposition and background information to give context to the main events of a story. Here's how to pronounce exposition: ek-spuh-zih-shun Understanding ExpositionĬlassic fairy tales often use the words "once upon a time" to introduce expository details, like who the main characters are, where the story is set, and what the major conflict or problem of the story might be. ![]() It's important to understand that all literature involves some sort of exposition, and it can be done either well (such that as a reader you almost don't realize it's happening) or badly (such that it lamely messes up the pacing or energy of the story).

Beside Irrlicht, the will-o'-the-wisp has also been called in German Irrwisch (where Wisch translates to 'wisp'), as found in e.g. Instead, the Latin ignis fatuus is documented no earlier than the 16th century in Germany, where it was coined by a German humanist, and appears to be a free translation of the long-existing German name Irrlicht ('wandering light' or 'deceiving light') conceived of in German folklore as a mischievous spirit of nature the Latin translation was made to lend the German name intellectual credibility. The term is not attested in the Middle Ages either. Despite its Latin origins, the term ignis fatuus is not attested in antiquity, and what the ancient Romans called the will-o'-wisp may be unknown. The Latin name ignis fatuus is composed of ignis, meaning 'fire' and fatuus, an adjective meaning 'foolish', 'silly' or 'simple' it can thus be literally translated into English as 'foolish fire' or more idiomatically as 'giddy flame'. In the United States, they are often called "spook-lights", "ghost-lights", or "orbs" by folklorists and paranormal enthusiasts. The term jack-o'-lantern ('Jack of the lantern') originally referred to a will-o'-the-wisp. The term "will-o'-the-wisp" comes from "wisp", a bundle of sticks or paper sometimes used as a torch and the name " Will", thus meaning 'Will of the torch'. Modern science explains the light aspect as natural phenomena such as bioluminescence or chemiluminescence, caused by the oxidation of phosphine (PH 3), diphosphane (P 2H 4) and methane (CH 4) produced by organic decay. In urban legends, folklore and superstition, wills-o'-the-wisp are typically attributed to ghosts, fairies or elemental spirits. The Will o' the Wisp and the Snake by Hermann Hendrich (1854–1931) Normal is more like a friendly push along and Turbo – while not a big kick – does make a big difference on short, sharp ramps.By Mark / Last updated - February 14, 2022īianchi has been building bicycles in Treviglio, Italy, for over 130 years, making it one of the oldest surviving bike brands in the world. A 100km range or so from such mixed power usage isn’t too bad at all and I’m inclined to believe that the stated 120km would be achievable if you gently ride said distance without leaving Eco.Įco is the least satisfying of the powered modes though because the overall weight of the Bianchi is still reasonably noticeable, so it doesn’t feel as if the assistance is offering much. Range anxiety usually occurred towards the end of a second day of riding as the once fully charged battery drained towards 97km. That’s not to say the E-Spillo didn’t perform well on those journeys, and I think that I used the motor as most people will – a mix of all three modes, the majority of time spent in Normal, with occasional Turbo boosts on inclines and dips into Eco when range anxiety kicked in. The brand does, of course, offer sportier e-road bikes for longer rides and its new E-Omnia range looks better suited to bigger commutes. There’s also an E-Tube Ride app which will collect your ride data if activated when paired during pedalling.Ī lot of my testing was carried out on a reasonably flat 30-mile round trip commute which is, arguably, longer than the type of journey Bianchi has in mind for this bike. On Shimano’s more advanced systems this app also allows you to personalise power delivery and connect to Di2 shifters. Very continental, but I eventually claimed my blue passport by downloading the E-Tube Project app and adjusting language, distance and the like over Bluetooth. Initially, the display is set to – naturally – Italian. Battery power is also indicated with a familiar phone-style five-bar graphic. Scrolling gives you various easy-to-read sets of basic data including speed, estimated range, distance and time travelled. This has two buttons over and above the on/off switch for scrolling through the display options and controlling the lights. The E-Spillo is brought to life by the GPS size-and-style Shimano Steps E6100 head unit. ![]() That’s decent enough for riding around town, but you’ll want something with a bit more punch if you’re riding anywhere really dark. The rear is built into the slim, detachable battery that powers both lights and the front is a retro-styled 20 lux unit. I’m not sure why all powered bikes don’t come with some form of built-in illumination, so I’m glad to say that the E-Spillo ships with front and rear lights. The rear light is integrated into the battery pack, which neatly slides into the rack. There’s also a walk assist mode to help push the bike along if needed. To that end, the E5000 motor offers three power options with varying levels of grunt up to 250 watts and 40Nm of torque: Eco will deliver 40 per cent of your effort, Normal will match you and Turbo gives 200 per cent. With an ebike, of course, weight is somewhat moot because you’ve probably bought the E-Spillo Luxury so that you don’t have to worry so much about the bike’s (or your) mass. The total weight puts it in the ballpark of the best electric hybrid bikes, such as those in Specialized’s non-SL Turbo Vado range. The removable third-party battery itself weighs 2.7kg and the Shimano Steps E5000 mid-mounted drive unit around 2.4kg. ![]() With the battery, it weighs in at 21.65kg. ![]() The bike is available in 47cm and 53cm sizes and I tested the larger of the two. The E-Spillo’s traditional-looking frameset is aluminium – standard 6061 if you’re interested – while the fork is steel. ![]() The Luxury on test – also available in a women’s-specific version – trades up Shimano’s mid-mounted Steps E5000 with a slim 418Wh battery under the rear rack for a maximum claimed range of 120km. However, it is done through a completely different framework (QML) than what I used to make FocusWriter (QWidgets), so I would still have to rewrite a lot of FocusWriter. Qt, the toolkit I use, has finally added preliminary support for Android. You can use C++ through Android’s NDK, but the NDK doesn’t provide the same API as the toolkits on desktop Linux. Regular Android apps are written in Java, and FocusWriter is written in C++. It is not just a matter of compiling for Android, I would have to completely rewrite my programs. While Android does use the Linux kernel, absolutely nothing else is shared with desktop Linux for regular GUI programs. Unfortunately, it is not a simple matter to add Android support. I am aware of the lack of good writing programs for Android. I’m happy to hear that you love FocusWriter so much! What would have to happen for you to move in this direction?Īlso, if anyone else reads this post and agrees with me, give a hoot. I would put a link in my email signature. I would leave glowing reviews and get all of my friends to do the same. The “Office-Suites” in the Play Store are $15 for a frustrating UI experience and a one-size-fits-all feature set. There is a giant hole in the Google Play Store that FW would fill with ease. So, is FW for Android in the works? This may be my non-coding naivete, but isn’t Android Linux’s close cousin? Nothing matches the powerful simplicity of FW. I have installed and uninstalled EVERY app out there. The Android alternatives have a clunky UI, lack writer-specific features, or are web-based (Google Drive). Here’s my issue: I am trying to switch from laptop to tablet and FocusWriter is not Android. I am pretty critical of the distraction-free word processors out there, and FW literally has every feature that I need. I am like a FocusWriter preacher, going around converting anyone who will listen. There’s minimal markup for section headers (#), synopses (=), dual column dialogue etc, Fountain importers can sort it out from there. Basically, you just type the script without formatting, apart from caps for slugs and character names, and aligned left. (I know the next sentence automatically follows in the Summary, but marking up a specific line feels cleaner to me and the ‘=’ plays nicely with Fountain’s markup for a synopsis paragraph).įountain’s actually far more simple than, for instance, MMD (it’s designed for screenwriters after all □ ). One of the features I like in Focus is the Scene Summary, and it would be useful for me if this could incorporate a paragraph of Synopsis as well, perhaps marked up by starting with an ‘=’ sign. The other point is more about ease of use when creating those files in Focus. ![]() fountain as a suffix would be convenient for that, as it tells Trelby to treat what is essentially a. ![]() I’m not asking for page layout, or making things bold/italic – it’s about using Focus to create files which Trelby and other screenplay apps can then format. ![]() The game allows players to create a region of land by terraforming, and then to design and build a settlement which can grow into a city. Can I design desktop wallpapers? Yes, you can! You do not need to be a graphic designer for you to do this. That said, desktop wallpapers cannot be ignored, they mean different things to different people. Adding a quote will act as a reminder of what inspires you in your day-to-day life. Interesting, huh? You can add an image that shows how you feel or one that means something to you. Sometimes, people display their feelings through the use of desktop wallpapers. They add glamor to your computer and make it look aesthetically appealing and highly presentable. However, this element comes with a sense of beauty. In fact, you can decide to use a dark colour, and life will move on as usual. What is the use of a desktop wallpaper? Well, adding a wallpaper to your desktop is not mandatory. What you need to know is that these images that you add will neither increase nor decrease the speed of your computer. A desktop wallpaper is highly customizable, and you can give yours a personal touch by adding your images (including your photos from a camera) or download beautiful pictures from the internet. The background of this screen can be a single colour, multiple colours, or some other graphical representations. What is a desktop wallpaper? When you boot your computer, there is an initial screen that comes up, in which your folders, documents, and software shortcuts are placed. For children, you might try “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” or “The Wizard of Oz.” For slightly older children, you could cue up “Hocus Pocus” or the recently released “Hocus Pocus 2.” Of course, the best of the best witch stories - those forged in the fearsome horror genre, where no devilish detail of witchy legend need be darkened - belong to only the most daring (read: age appropriate) viewers. No, witches endure because they channel an unceasing appetite for cruelty: a willingness to destroy whatever stands in the way of their desire and an eagerness to sacrifice whomever it takes to prove undying devotion to their own wickedness.Ĭonsidering the epic moral quandaries witches and witchcraft so often represent, it’s no wonder these characters have appeared in all kinds of stories intended for all kinds of audiences. What makes these characters compelling isn’t their sentient spell books, flying broomsticks, or poisonous apples. Some witches just want to be loved consider the appropriately-named “The Love Witch” or the middle chunk of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” Others crave beauty, youth, power, or something altogether more sinister think the unending greed examined in Luca Guadagnino’s astounding re-imagining of Dario Argento’s “Suspiria.” Some witches feed on children see Roald Dahl’s “The Witches” and its two film adaptations starring Anjelica Huston and Anne Hathaway respectively. Meanwhile, Will and Emma begin to develop feelings for one another while working together. Just when it looks like the plan is going to get approved, Emma's grandmother, Rose, intercedes and could cause the whole thing to crash. LOVE IN HARMONY VALLEY follows Will and Emma as they try to convince the people of Harmony Valley to approve a plan to reopen the town's closed winery and bring new jobs and revenue to the people. Don't bother with this, it will have you squirming with discomfort. I skipped much of it as it was predictable and then needed to watch Heartland to remind myself of a way to spend time with a true heartfelt, moving and wholesome production. And that declaration of love at the end was laughable. The panic attack scenes and then ending up in hospital? What? Out for a couple of hours? What did they do, drug her? As a sufferer of panic attacks, l know exactly what it is like and though when she got anxious, that wasn't a bad portrayal but in the hospital was unrealistic. ![]() But even her acting was low standard, no where near as good as she is in Heartland. Like everyone else, l watched it because of Amber Marshall.l am a total Heartland fan, and have watched the series many times, to ironically help me with anxiety. Terrible plot, awful acting and the music in the background incredibly distracting. Why the great reviews? Think there might be some cheating going on because this was a nauseating movie. And the rating distribution chart shows way heavier than usual bias for 10 stars. Note about BALLOT BOX STUFFING in reviews: check out all the 10 star reviews where this movie is the only movie reviewed. Paula Barrett seemed one dimensional as Rose. And unlike some movies where the obligatory antagonism between the leads almost seems like flirting, there was nothing positive in that part here. I can't say there was any chemistry between Amber Marshall and Eric Hicks because the amount of screen time they spent together with any harmony (sorry no pun intended) didn't seem much longer than the time they spent where he couldn't stand her. The climax was predictable as was the ending. Add to it the amount of screen time in personal politicking. I wish I had measured how much screen time was spent in the actual city council presentations, which made me cringe to watch. The premise is somewhat fresh and the story doesn't use all the formula tropes like so many of this genre, but those are the only positive things I can say about the story. I think it is worth a watch, the first hour of the movie flew by, I was truly entertained and it was 12.30 in the morning. And honestly, I'm still confused about the chemistry, they did not have enough scenes (again, it's not centre around romance). I didn't disliked him but I would have liked for his character to be more cheerful, at least towards the ending. However, I have my doubts with Eric Hicks. ![]() I might watch more things with her (should I watch Heartland? I've had my eyes on it for a while). It was my first time watching Amber Marshall. I understood where the Grandmother was coming from even though she was wrong. Unlike Hallmark, the plot IS more believable, I can see this happening in real life. They cannot create a relationship out of thin air. here goes my main problem: I understand that Emma and Will had known each other for 20 years but before confessing feelings I would have liked for them to spend more time together, all we got was a montage and 2 scenes. It's not centered around romance, which I don't mind but. It's also quite different from what Hallmark and Lifetime offers. It reminded me of the first movies of this kind that I watched around 5 years ago. So, they present a project to the city council.
